ARTIST STATEMENT

I have always had a need to create. I think in images, and painting is the language through which I process the world around me — a way of making sense of thoughts, emotions and the things I cannot always put into words.

My work is driven by curiosity, emotion and a fascination with human nature. I am particularly interested in the space between instinct and social conditioning — the tension between who we are naturally and who we learn to become. Questions around identity, mental health, freedom, expectations and the structures that shape our lives often find their way into my work.

My ongoing INSTINCTS series explores the parallels between humans and the animal world. Animals act from instinct, while humans have developed layers of rules, expectations and social structures that can make us suppress or disguise our most natural impulses. Through the meeting of human and animal, I explore what remains underneath those layers — our fears, desires, curiosity, need for belonging, protection, freedom and connection.

I am drawn to expressive faces, eyes, movement, light and shadow, and I often combine recognisable figurative elements with loose, energetic brushwork and my characteristic use of colour and metallic pigments. Dark backgrounds allow the light, colour and emotion within the motif to emerge and almost break through the surface.

My ADHD, diagnosed in adulthood, has also become an important part of how I understand my creative mind. What can sometimes feel like inner chaos can also be a source of intense curiosity, unconventional thinking and creative energy. Painting gives that energy somewhere to go.

At the core of my practice is a belief in having the courage to be different in a world that constantly tries to place us inside frameworks and expectations.
